I have found it quite hard to narrow my research areas down into 3 chosen areas, so thought that a quick brainstorm/list would be needed!!
HOBBY/INTEREST
- Interest: Signage - In the form of hand rendered/painted signs. For example:
Signage has always been an interest of mine, and I always really appreciate typography that has been rendered well. I love stopping and looking at signage that looks like it has history behind it, or was created hundreds of years ago.
- Hobby: Playing guitar - I'm in an acoustic contemporary band with a friend of mine. This is something that I really enjoy, and we've played at gigs and festivals over the past few years.
- Hobby: Photography - I used to want to pursue photography as a future career, but since discovering Graphic Design, I have always kept it close to my heart and something that I do whenever I have the spare time.
- Interest: Illustration/Type Design - Both areas are something that I really appreciate and love to look at. I could spend hours flipping through books filled with images of hand rendered type, or pretty illustrations.
- Interest: Festivals - Particularly the less mainstream and smaller festivals. There have been plenty of festivals in my local area, and it's interesting to see how they differ.
- Interest: Favourite Colour - I thought that it could be really interesting researching into a particular colour used in various forms of design. My favourite colour is very similar to Pantone 337 C, but any colour similar to this is just as nice.
Interest: Editorial Design - Fashion and editorial design has always been an interest of mine, and an area of design that I may like to pursue when I'm older.
INVENTION/DISCOVERY
- Editorial Design - After studying rules into grids and columns, I have found out a lot behind the way magazines and publications are designed. I have also discovered that Editorial Design is one of my strengths, and I can come up with publications after publications that look good.
- Martin Lewis Design - I have recently gained a contact into the design world. Martin Lewis is a designer in London in a small creative studio in Shoreditch, who I have been in regular contact with over the past year. I visited the studio in the summer and found out lots of little tricks of the trade whilst chatting to him in his studio. Although Martin's design style isn't similar to what I'm interested in, he is a really knowledgable designer and extremely useful to talk to.
PERSON/PLACE
- Place: Leeds - A brand new place to me. Having moved to a city (even if it's a small one) from a tiny little village in The Cotswolds, it has been a huge learning curve. I really enjoy living in Leeds, and love how I can escape back to the country whenever I wish. It's really nice to be able to experience the best of both worlds.
- Person: Jessica Hische - I really love the design style of Hische's work, and it relates to my keen interest in hand-rendered typography and signage.
- Person: David Smith - Smith is a traditional ornamental glass artist, and there are really interesting videos of how he creates his work on vice and youtube. This relates again to my interest in signage and traditional design methods.
FINAL CHOICES:
Hand-rendered signage and typography
Favourite Colour
Editorial Design
